    Upcoming: 2nd CONSENSE Week @ KU Leuven!

    Next week, the CONSENSE ESRs and consortium will get together for the 2nd CONSENSE week – a weeklong meeting filled with scientific discussions, transfer lectures, interactive outreach sessions and a 2-day ESR workshop focusing on academic publishing.

    The meeting will commence with progress updates and discussions on all 15 ESR projects, offering the possibility for valuable real-time and in-plenum feedback, and paving the way for the next steps forward. The scientific lectures will be dedicated to the topics of “Photonic Biosensors for Real-time Monitoring of Live and Single cells” and “Single molecule plasmon sensing” delivered by Hatice Altug (EPFL) and Peter Zijlstra (TUE). The third scientific lecture will be held by Christophe Caucheteur (UMONS) on “Optical fiber grating-based plasmonic biochemical sensors”.

    Moving from science to transfer-and entrepreneurial skills, Filip Delport (FOx) and Menno Prins (TUE / HELIA) will share their experiences “from academia to the spin-off”, followed by “An Introduction to Patents: System, Procedures, Rights” delivered by European Patent Attorney Ivo De Baere (KUL) .

    “How do I communicate about and disseminate my research results?” These questions will be answered in the last agenda point of the first days – an interactive “Outreach session” delivered by accelCH, going over all things communication, dissemination and exploitation.

    We will end the 2nd CONSENSE week with a 2-day ESR workshop on “how to visually succeed in academic publishing”, learning and practicing our graphical figure skills. We’re looking forward to lots of learnings and new skills to practically apply in the future.

    International Symposium on Continuous Real-Time Biomolecular Sensing & Final CONSENSE ITN Meeting!

    Next week, from August 26-30, the CONSENSE ITN will gather for an important milestone in the project: The First international Symposium on Continuous Real-time Biomolecular Sensing. The symposium, co-organised with SensUs 2024, marks the project’s final event. 

    The meeting hosted at the Eindhoven University of Technology will commence with our final in-person meeting of the CONSENSE project, where all ESRs will present updates on their research. This is an important opportunity to evaluate the progress made, foster collaboration, and ensure that the ambitious goals of the project are met as the CONSENSE draws to a close. From August 27-28, the CONSENSE final event will take place. The first International Symposium on Continuous Real-Time Biomolecular Sensing is a key dissemination activity designed to showcase the achievements of the CONSENSE project. By bringing together experts in biomolecular engineering, optical sensing, and cell biology, the event will highlight the latest advancements in continuous real-time biomolecular sensing and explore future applications in the field.

    We are excited to see the event come to live, present our progress and engage with a broad range of stakeholders, including the scientific community, industry professionals, and the public.

    The CONSENSE ITN is delighted to announce the first International Symposium on Continuous Real-Time Biomolecular Sensing, an event to share and discuss the latest advances in the field of continuous sensing technologies, organised together with and around this year’s SensUs Student Competition. The symposium focuses on: (i) the monitoring of biomolecules at micromolar levels and below, (ii) the core components of continuous sensors, i.e. molecular and detection concepts, (iii) sensing concepts that are able to monitor increases as well as decreases of biomarker concentration, and (iv) sensing concepts that operate without consuming sensing reagents, in order to be suited for longterm use. Students, researchers, and professionals worldwide are warmly invited.

    Symposium Format

    • Hybrid Format: The symposium will be held in a hybrid approach, enabling presentations from expert speakers and facilitating virtual attendance from participants worldwide. Presentation materials, including slides and posters, will be accessible electronically.
    • Physical Venue: Participants on-site are welcome to join the symposium at the TU/e campus, in the Atlas lecture hall. 
    • Duration: The symposium spans two days, commencing on Tuesday, 27 August, and concluding on Wednesday, 28 August 2024. The symposium timeslot will be 16:00-21:30 CEST.
    • Session Structure: Each session will kick off with a 25-minute introductory presentation, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. Subsequently, three focused presentations, each lasting 15 minutes with an additional 10-minute Q&A segment, will take place.

    • SensUs 2024: Focusing on continuous creatinine sensing in Interstitial Skin Fluid (ISF), SensUs 2024 will hold its testing event on Tuesday, 27 August.
    • CONSENSE ITN Consortium Meeting: The Biosensing Open Day, centered around continuous biosensing, is organized as part of the ITN CONSENSE consortium meeting, where CONSENSE ESRs will share their progress updates.

    Hello everyone! From September 26th to 30th, 2024, the CONSENSE team gathered in Eindhoven, Netherlands, for our final consortium meeting and we are excited to share with you the highlights of the meeting!

    Company visits and scientific talks

    The meeting began with visits to two companies, Nostics and Lumicks, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. During these visits, the ESRs gained valuable insights into the cutting-edge technology driving their biosensing-based products. Following this, each ESR presented updates on their research in continuous biosensing, sparking engaging and insightful discussions.

    The ESRs also took part in the annual SensUS competition , where they evaluated the student’s biosensor designs, listened to their pitches, and provided constructive feedback on their work.

    The First international Symposium on Continuous Real-time Biomolecular Sensing

    As part of the final event, CONSENSE hosted the first International Symposium on Continuous Real-Time Biomolecular Sensing between the 27th and 28th September, 2024. The opening sessions featured distinguished speakers, including Professors Kevin W. Plaxco, Menno Prins, and H. Tom Soh, who presented on topics such as electrochemical sensors, particle-based sensors, and SPR, SER, and FRET-based sensors. Additionally, ESRs Abtin Saateh, Claudia Scarpellini, and Andris Jeminejs delivered oral presentations, while the remaining ESRs contributed by presenting posters at the symposium.

    Social events

    No ITN meeting is complete without social, cultural, and team-building activities. This time, we enjoyed bouldering, playing boules, and mingling with members of another ITN group, SynSensor.

    Follow up: 3rd CONSENSE week in Aarhus!

    Hey everyone! We are very excited to share with you the highlights of the recent CONSENSE meeting in Aarhus, one of the oldest cities in Denmark. The program was packed with exciting activities, showing the contrast between rich history of city and the novel scientific breakthroughs carried within. Let’s dive in!

    Scientific talks: sharing the newest results

    The meeting kicked off with a series of captivating scientific lectures revolving around the topic of architectures and challenges of continuous sensing devices, such as:

    As a part of the “Wider Horizon” initiative, guest speakers Prof. Jørgen Kjems and Prof. Ebbe Sloth Andersen from Aarhus University gave lectures on the how RNA aptamers and RNA origami could be used as sensing devices. Afterwards, the students presented their recent updates in the projects of continuous biosensing, receiving feedback both from the peers and professors alike.

    Workshops, social activities and more!

    The scientific program was followed by a series of interactive workshops, dedicated to career development and grant writing. Invited speakers shared insights on navigating academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, students tried their hand in assessing and evaluating their skills and expertise, which will be crucial in choosing the career path ahead. The workshop also included a visit to The Kitchen – a startup incubator of Aarhus University, where research discoveries can be turned into business ideas.

    Another highlight was the grant writing workshop led by seasoned researchers from Aarhus University. The students learned essential tips and tricks for crafting successful grant proposals, as well as intricacies of applying for postdoctoral research grants. 

    The ITN meeting would not be possible without some social, cultural and teambuilding activities. From the Old Town in Aarhus to Tropical Zoo in Randers, the students got to experience a small part of what Denmark has to offer!
